The Limit Club: A band with no limits defining psychobilly music
Jessica Teiman Editor in Chief
Arizona’s psychobilly scene may not be huge, but to those who love the music, it is fantastic. One of Phoenix’s own, The Limit Club, is making a name for themselves in the local psycho-scene. Guitarist and vocalist, Nick Feratu, sat down for an interview:
Q: How would you sum yourselves up?
A: Basically, we try to mix 80s new wave with death rock and punk. Our sound is a mix of the music we listen to, like The Quakes and The Blue Cats.
Q: When did you first start playing guitar?
A: I started when I was about fourteen, or about 10 years ago. I took a few classes but never took formal lessons. I learned from Dad who played country music and I taught myself, mostly.
Q: I understand that you like to mash your favorite music styles together to create a unique sound. Do you have a favorite combination?
A: We play music with rhythm, stuff you can dance to. Girls like music better when they can dance to it, and with the instruments experimenting with psychobilly, rockabilly, goth, and old punk music, it creates an original sound.
Q: You guys tour frequently. What do you consider the best part of the whole experience?
A: The best part is hanging out outside of our home state and meeting new people. It’s a nonstop party, but not like Mötley Crüe or anything. We don’t have groupies and stuff but it’s a lot of fun. All bars and venues are different. One night, you are playing at a really nice place with lights and sound and the next you’re playing at a little hole in the wall with no light system where you have to bring your own mic stand. It’s fun adapting to different environments.
Q: The band lineup has changed a bit since the original. How did the current lineup meet? Why did you decide to work together?
A: I guess I’ll start from the beginning. Joel and I were in another band. It was basically just fun acting like a famous band, but we really weren’t. When it ended, we got into rockabilly and got our own drummer. (We were using a keyboard hooked up to a guitar amp before). The original drummer didn’t really know how to play. He quit to go to school and hang out with his girlfriend more. Then we got Jack for about a month. He played two shows but wasn’t really that into it. On the road, we met Juan Carlos through a friend and he’s been in the band ever since. Joel decided he was more interested in his family and his kid so he kind of quit (was fired). Nick David, the current bass player, was a friend from another band and is now a part of the Limit Club, too.
Q: Do guys have anything special coming up?
A: We are currently working on some new material, going on a tour in July, want to have two songs recorded by then and name the tour after it. Then we may have a new full length album out by the end of 2009, but that’s a long way away.
Q: What is your favorite album or song you have put out? Why?
A: My favorite album of ours would have to be Phantom Cats. We took our time with it, about six months, and spent several thousand dollars. We got a professional engineer and producer who had recorded the Koffin Kats. Overall, the album came out clean and full.
